My personal story with Deafheaven goes way back to their first release Roads to Judah and my first acquaintance with the band was seeing them live supporting Russian Circles in Copenhagen. At that point I didn’t really get it, I thought it was OK, but not so interesting. The live performance was pretty good though.
Then came Sunbather, and this really was an eyeopener for me. I thoroughly enjoyed every single bit of that album and it was definitely on my personal top 10 of that year. The way Deafheaven just nailed that blackgaze thing was mesmerizing.
Therefore i awaited the album New Bermuda with great anticipation, but for some reason I never really got into this album, it was actually a bit boring in my opinion and the songs were not even close to the quality of Sunbather.
Now we have Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, and due to the disappointment of New Bermuda I didn’t listen to the pre releases Honeycomb and Canary Yellow, so my first listen was really to put on the full album and give it a spin.
Kind of expecting something like New Bermuda and my expectations were not high at all.
Reinvention of a sound
Let me just say, I really didn’t expect this to happen !
Deafheaven has done it again. Just like my first listen to Sunbather I have the same chills and a feeling of a band that has invented a new sound.
Ordinary Corrupt Human Love has taken Deafheaven way beyond the border of mixing genres with perfection. Where Sunbather was blackgaze, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love is so much more than that. It somehow feels like Deafheaven has taken some of Flaming lips happiness and wildness, combined it with Broken Social Scene playfulness, spiced it up with some Dinosaur Jr licks, combined it with elements from post-rock and then run it all through the Deafheaven black-metal machine.
This sounds new and refreshing to me. Let alone the opener that kind of sets the mood for the album and then all the way to the last minutes Worthless Animal you are spellbound to the universe of Deafheaven.
I especially enjoy that Deafheaven has made such an uplifting album, with loads of positive major chords, kind of taking the same elements from Sunbather but this time lifting it to another level.
Ordinary Corrupt Human Love is very likely a major breakthrough album, where Sunbather was also a breakthrough album, this one will just take Deafheaven to another league.
