I’ve listened to Myrkur ever since her first demos, and been fascinated by the universe she has, both lyrically and musically. I really enjoy the heavy influences of folk music, choir music that blends very good with the black metal sounds that are the other part of Myrkurs sound. Off course, it’s not only Myrkur (aka Amalie Bruun ) herself that makes the songs so convincing it’s also the fellow musicians that really makes it all come together.
When she put out the Album ‘M’ it was a huge jump in quality in my opinion, an extremely well played and produced record, with Myrkur’s ethereal voice on top to bind all things together.
So here we are at the doorsteps to the next album Mareridt, out on Relapse Records September 15, and here is a song from that album. I already listened to another song from the album Måneblôt , a beautiful black metal tune with the signature sound of Myrkurs voice and screams, and this time blended with old folklore instruments, really a hit in my opinion.
But then this song comes out : Ulvinde . and this is just pure goosebumps all over, a song where Myrkur really shows off her versatile vocals. I think I counted at least 3 different vocal styles, every each one of them, performed to perfection. What really differentiate this song from other myrkur songs is a very laid back beat, almost slow disco with offbeat hihat, instead of classic black metal blast beats. This really shows a new aspect of Myrkur in my opinion, and I think this is proof of a developing artist, that are just about to release a cornerstone album. A song to just put on repeat.
When comparing these 2 new songs to songs from ‘M’ there’s also a leap in production quality. This time with Randall Dunn behind the knobs and a new lineup for all instruments.
This song and Måneblôt is a divination of an album that will be dark, beautiful, enchanting, horrifying and addictive, I am for sure looking forward to this album, and also seeing it performed live.
But check it out for yourself :
And then Måneblôt :
