This Patch Of Sky – Pale Lights ( This Will Destroy You Remix )

this-patch-of-sky-these-small-spacesFirst encounter of This Patch Of Sky, was, when I listened to the song Bella Muerte on the Open Language VOL. II – Side A compilation. Since then, I’ve been hooked and listened to all of This Patch Of Sky’s material. What a journey !

With a new album coming out very soon, I’ve listened a lot to the songs that are a already released and will be featured on that album. One of them is Pale Lights, that will appear in two flavours. A clean This Patch Of Sky Version and a version that is remixed by This Will Destroy You.

Here’s my 50 cents on the remix version, although comparing a bit with the “clean” version.

A Combo to remember

What a combo. The ethereal soothing huge landscapes of This Patch Of Sky and the playfulness, electronic inspired moments of This Will Destroy You.

This combo has made a dream like ambient song, that has evolved from the original song to a somewhat more electronical universe. Where the original song is already ambient in it’s feeling, it has some more rhythmic feeling coming from the picked strings and the train like drums. A really strong piece of music.

The remix is more low key and the rhythm comes more from the electronics. The way it starts with the echoing wavering melodies is in fact very This Will Destroy You like and when the cello joins in, with deep underlying bass joining, you get a warm joyful feeling. It’s a very rewarding and calm tone.

When the song evolves and heavy distorted keys, bass, guitar ?? joins in and out, as waves crashing on the beach, it unleashes a raw, unpolished, yet monumental realm, that succumb, the listener to a warm embrace.

An ambient loop

The ambient feel of Pale Lights in the remixed version, has a quality that you just want to put it on repeat. Due to the way the song starts and ends, you will get an uplifting soundtrack to your day, where you won’t really find out where it started or ended. A soundtrack that you easilly can listen to for hours.

In many ways, I think This Patch Of Sky and This Will Destroy You, have many things in common. They’re both excellent in building inspiring soundscapes that rises over time. They are both excellent in crafting low key, almost ambient songs. Both incorporates small amounts of electronica in their music and both have this grandiose warm sound, that lulls the listener into trance.

I am really happy that both versions of Pale Lights is going to be on the coming album These Small Places. There’s so many differences in the two versions, from the more rhythmic This Patch Of Sky version to the more ambient electronic This Will Destroy You version. Both versions are eminent pieces of music and there is no favourite of the two. Both are excellent.

And the concerts

This Patch Of Sky will perform live on the Dunk!USA festival on october 7-8, you should really attend that. The lineup is a killer.

I sincerely hope This Patch Of Sky will be touring europe. I would love if it could be with This Will Destroy You. That would really be a match made in heaven.

I’ve had the pleasure to attend This Will Destroy You concerts 3 times and would really enjoy one more, specially if This Patch Of Sky would join in. Well that’s just a wish 🙂 and I would happily go see This Patch Of Sky without This Will Destroy You on the bill.

Now, Since These Small Places will be released on Dunk! Records as well, one can hope that they will visit the european version of the Dunk! Festival

These Small Places are out September 22, take a listen to both versions of Pale Lights here :
